Happy Black History Month

On Martin Luther King Day, a man whose life’s work was recognized by millions around the world; including the people of Hawai’i who made leis for the last march on Selma. It is also the 129th anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom by American businessmen with the collusion of the US Military. A celebration and mourning that to me seem somehow connected. The country venerates a humanitarian and Noble Peace Prize recipient yet continues to improperly perceive the Hawaiian islands and her people as a possession and resource. (Actually the entire country was stolen, ok?). Reverend King and Reverend Akaka were allies and shared the values and ideals that make it possible for us to continue working our way to rights, protections, and justice for all. Although President Clinton acknowledged the deep wrong of the overthrow, Hawai’i is still subject to harmful colonial domination and militarization of these islands . So yes I acknowledge this day to honor Dr. King but we must also remember the overthrow of Queen Lili’uokalani on January 17, 1893. Writer: Aletha Dale
